Pre War

George WILLMORE was born on 3rd January 1894, in Aldbury, Hertfordshire, son of John (Wilmer) Willmore, a Farm Ploughman and Emma Wilmore (nee Garner). One of their nine children. His parents married in July 1897 in, Berkhamsted, Herts.


George was Baptised on 1st April 1894, in Aldbury, Herts.


1901 Census records George aged 7, living with his parents, brothers Harry/Henry 15, Sidney 11, and sister Annie 9, in Malting Lane, Aldbury, Herts.


1911 Census, George aged 17, is working as a Domestic Houseboy, living with his parents, brothers Sidney 21, and Fred 7, still in Maltings Lane, Aldbury.

Wartime Service

George travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment and issued with the service No. 12590. On completion of his training, he was sent to France, arriving on the 30th July 1915.


He was later promoted to Lance Corporal, and Gazetted the Military Medal on 9th July 1917, for Gallantry in the field. He was later posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment. George was Killed in Action on 23rd August 1918, aged 24, he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France, to the missing. Panel 4 & 5.

Additional Information

His father John Willmore was awarded a Dependents Pension of 5/- a week from 11th March 1919.


His effects of £17-12s-11d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £19, went to his mother Emma Willmore.


His brother Private 621377 Sidney George Willmore, of the Labour Corps, served in the Great war and survived.


Thomas Turney who is on the Aldbury Memorials died on the same day as George, same place and the same Regiment and is commemorated on the same Memorial in France. (Vis-En-Artois Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 4 & 5.
