Pre War
Robin Arthur Walton Williams was born on 11th January 1893, in Aldenham, Herts, son of Gerald Walter Williams (a Stock & Share Broker) and Annie Jane Williams.
He was Baptised on 11th March 1893, in the Parish Church, Aldenham, the family were living at Piggott’s Manor, Aldenham at the time.
1901 Census records Robin aged 8, living with his parents, and younger brother Chris in, Aldenham.
Robin was educated at Cheam School, Newbury, Berks, Eton Collage, Winsor, Berks, leaving in 1911, to go to Kings Collage University, Cambridge.
Wartime Service
On the outbreak of war Robin left University to join the Special Reserve of Officers.
Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant to the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in November 1914, promoted Lieutenant in February 1915.
Robin was Killed in Action at Hill 60, on 18th April 1915, while leading his men to attack a trench which had been taken the previous evening, but had been retaken, even though he had been wounded earlier in the day. He has no known grave. He is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Leper, Belgium.
Additional Information
His father Gerald received a War Gratuity of £40, and his Pay Owing of £4-10s-0d. Plaque placed in church by his parents: Gerald and Annie Jane Williams.
