Leonard Williams was born in 1897 in Harrow, Middlesex, son of Henry St John and Annie Maria Williams.


In 1901 the family was living at St Ann’s Road, Harrow on the Hill and Henry was working as a clerk in the coal trade. By 1911 the family had moved to Hamilton Road, Wealdstone and Henry was a manager in a furniture depository.


In 1918 Leonard’s parents were living at ‘Homestead’, Uxbridge Road, Mill End, Rickmansworth.

Wartime Service

Leonard Williams enlisted at London and entered France on 1 May 1915.


In 1918 the 6th Battalion of the Seaforth Highlanders was in the Cambrai area until 21 March when the Germans launched an overwhelming attack and they withdrew back to Bapaume. In April they moved north and were engaged in the Battles of the Lys. Leonard was reported as presumed dead.

Additional Information

His effects of £30 9s 11d, which included a War gratuity of £20 10s, were left to his father, Henry.
