Wilfred Hanbury Grenville-Grey was born in 1895 at St George Hanover Sq, London, the son of George & Ellinor Grenville-Grey, and one of three children.


On the 1901 Census he was living at his grandfather's house,  Holmwood Lodge, Sunninghill, Berks, with his grandfather, parents, siblings and servants.


He was educated at Wellington College, Berkshire from 1908 to 1912 and on the 1911 Census he was listed as a student, age 16.


 His parents later lived at 141 Ebury Street, London, SW1.

Wartime Service

He went to Sandhurst in 1913 and was gazetted to the Kings Royal Rifles in 1914, serving as a Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion.


He was shot by a German officer while leading an attack on the night of 15-16 May 1915, during the Battle of Festubert. and died almost immediately. He was then buried in Rue-des-Berceaux Military Cemetery, Richbourg-L-Avoue, France.

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs Ellinor S Grenville-Grey, 141 Ebury St, S.W., ordered his headstone inscription: "LOVE IS STRONG AS DEATH UNDERNEATH ARE THE EVERLASTING ARMS",


Probate was granted on 1 July to his father G Grenville-Grey RNAS . Address given as Lewin [Tewin] Rectory, Welwyn with effects of £106 7s.


His father received a war gratuity of £35 and pay owing totalling £63.
