Pre War

James Greenwood was born on 24th April 1886, in China, son of James and Emma Greenwood.


1901 Census Cecil records Cecil aged 14, living with his widowed mother Emma and sister Winifred Swift (30), at 9 Conduit Road, Bedford, Beds. The family had a liv-in Domestic Servant.


Cecil married Dorothy Olivia Sarson, of Nice in France, in 1909, the marriage was registered in Paddington, London.


1911 Census records Cecil and Dorothy, living at 45 Warwick Avenue, Paddington, London. Cecil is employed as an Insurance Clerk.

Wartime Service

Cecil enlisted and posted to the 9th (County of London) Battalion, (Queen Victoria’s Rifles) London Regiment, and issued with the service number 392566, later 6160,


He was Gazetted 2nd Lieutenant, to the 10th (County of London) Battalion, (Hackney) London Regiment, on 25th January 1917, later Gazetted Lieutenant. Seeing action on the Western Front he was Killed in Action on 9th August 1918, he is buried in Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Somme, France. Grave Ref: IV. F. 1.

His effects of £114-06-11, went to his widow and executor Dorothy Olivia Greenwood.


His Medal Index Card (MID) does not record what medals he was awarded. We have assumed as he died overseas, he would at least qualify for the Victory and British War Medals.


CWGC record he was born at Bombay, India, all other records record place of birth as China.


Dorothy remarried in late 1919 to John Balfour, (a (Jobber) Member of the London Stock Exchange) the marriage was Registered in Kensington, London.
