Wartime Service

On the 2nd December 1917 the Battalion were located in a sunken road near Bourlon Wood when they were ordered to attack German positions in the wood. There were a great many shell holes in the wood and the Germans were using these as shelter.


Although the attack was successful the assault cost the lives of 31 men. John died as a result of wounds received during this action. He is buried in the Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt, France.
