Pre War
Herbert was born in Watford on the 2nd of April 1878 as the second son of the late Walter James Green and his wife Maria Jane. He was educated at Charterhouse and Exeter College, Oxford. Gazetted 2nd Lieut. in May 1900, promoted Lieut. on the 23rd December 1901, Capt. 21st October 1911, Major 1st September 1915, Lieut-Col. May 1916 and Acting Brigadier-General in November 1916.
He served in India and took part in the Aden Hinterland Expedition in 1904. From September 1910 Herbert served with the West African Frontier Force (attached Northern Nigerian Regt.) and went through the Cameroon Expedition. He returned home in April 1915.
Wartime Service
From 1916 Herbert served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders where he commanded a battalion of the Essex Regt. for a short time, and subsequently the 1st Battn. of the Buffs, taking part in the fighting on the Somme from June 1917.
He died at No. 8 General Hospital in Rouen, of wounds received at Landrecies on the 7th of November.
