Pre War

Ronald William Wilkins was born St Albans in 1878, the son of Henry and Caroline Wilkins.


On the 1881 Census the family were living at George Street, St Albans, where his father was working as a Master Tailor. By the 1891 Census he was a boarder at Nelson College in Lee, London. 


He enlisted with the Lancers of the Line in 1900 under reg. no. 5205. 


His parents had moved to Boscombe, Bournemouth in 1901, and were living at  'St Albans,' Capstone Road, Bournemouth in 1911. Ronald was said to be living in Bournemouth Hampshire, when he enlisted in Luton, Bedfordshire, possibly having been recalled as a previously serving soldier.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Luton, Beds, with the Lincolnshire Regiment and served in France from 1 March 1915, initially as a Lance Sergeant (under reg. no. 3271)  rising to Acting Regimental Sergeant Major. 


He died of heart failure in Pewsey, Wiltshire on 28 July 1918, age 40 and is buried in Wimborne Road Cemetery, Bournemouth, Dorset. 

Additional Information

His father Henry received a war gratuity of £28 10s and pay owing of £34 4s 10d.
