Born in about March 1887, Charles Green was the son of James and Amy (née Farnham) Green His parents were married (registered in Royston district) in the third quarter of 1870. James was a carpenter.


At the 1881 Census, they were living at Merry Hill Lane, Bushey with five children: James (10), Jane (7), Harvey (5), William (3) and Amy (1). They were still there at the 1891 Census, with William (13), Amy (11), Lydia (9), Charles (7), Mercy (4), Julia (1). The three older children were not present and were presumably living elsewhere.


By the time of the 1901 Census, the family had moved to 77, Wolsley Place, School Lane, Bushey with Charles (16), Julia (11), George (8) and Fred (6). Charles was recorded as a labourer.


They were still there at the 1911 Census with Charles (25), Julia (21), George (18) and Fred (16). They couple also had one other child who had died.

Wartime Service

Charles enlisted in Bedford as Private 27691 with the Bedfordshire Regiment, 2nd Battalion and served in France and Flanders.


He was killed in action on 18 September 1918 and is remembered with honour at the Vis-En-Artois Memorial in France. He is commemorated on the memorial on Clay Hill in Bushey.
