Albert John Green was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire in November 1886, son of Willliam James Green a, Riverman and Elizabeth Emma Green (nee Pearce). One of eight children although one died in infancy.
He was Baptised on the 14th February 1887, in the Parish of Cheshunt, Herts.
1891 Census records Albert aged 4, living with his parents, sister Alice (12), brothers William (5) and George (2) at, 2 New River Cottages, Brookfield Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.
He attended Dewhurst Endowed Boys School, Cheshunt.
1901 Census records Albert aged 14, working as a Nursery Garden Labourer, living with his parent’s sister Edith (9) and four brothers still in Brookfield Lane.
1911 Census Albert (24), single and working as a River Labourer, living with his parents’ sister Edith (19) and four brothers, still in Brookfield Lane.
Albert married Beatrice Bolden of Bocking, Essex, the daughter of James and Joel/Jael Bolden, in 1912, the marriage was registered in Edmonton, Middx. They went on to have a daughter Beatrice born in September 1913.
Wartime Service
Albert enlisted at Tottenham, Middx, joining the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) with the service number L/9698. It is possible Albert was a member of the Royal Fusiliers, Territorial Force when war was declared, and he volunteered for overseas service. His service number indicated he could have enlisted in the Royal Fusilier, Territorial Force in 1902.
He arrived on the Western Front on the 12th September 1914 with “B” Company, 4th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers.
He was reported missing and presumed Killed in Action on the 26th October 1914, possible during the Battle for La Bassee, Armentieres and Messines, (10th Oct to 2nd Nov 1914). He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial in France, to the missing.
Additional Information
Beatrice received a widow’s pension of 15/- a week from 12th July 1915. Beatrice remarried in 1920, to William Kipps.
His effects of £7-9s-9d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £5, went to his widow Beatrice.
His elder brother Private L/10477 William Charles Green of the 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers died on the 30th August 1915.
