Pre War

Son of Walter  and Jessie Elizabeth Cresswell of North Villa, Vale of Health, Hampstead Heath, London. Born in Elstree on the 20th of March 1892.


He was a decorative designer before he joined the Queen Victoria Rifles upon the declaration of war.

Wartime Service

Ernest went to France on the 24th of January 1915 and was wounded at Hill 60 in April 1915. He was with Lieut. Woolley (the first Territorial Officer to win the V.C.) at the time.


Having recovered and rejoined his regiment after a few days in hospital, he was killed in action near St. Eloi on the 4th of June 1915 and buried at Elyenwalle Chateau. The papers appointing him Sergt. were ready when he was killed.
