Pre War

Edward Grantham was born in Halton, Tring on 8 Oct 1899 (baptised 3 Nov 1889 in Halton, Bucks.) to Reverend Herbert Alfred Grantham and Mary Louise (nee Potter).


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Dorothy L (born 1882), Herbert (born 1883), Marjorie (born 1884), Muriel (born 1886), Henry (born 1889), Edward and Irene (born 1891) were living at the Chilterns, Weston Turville, Bucks., together with 8 boarding pupils, 2 tutors and 7 servants.


Edward’s father died in Apr 1895.


On the 1901 Census Edward’s widowed mother, together with Dorothy, Herbert, Marjorie, Muriel, Henry, Edward, Irene and Monica (born 1896) were living Ellesdon, Bedford.


On the 1911 Census Edward was a boarder with the Priestley family at the Grammar School House, Tewkesbury, Glos.

Wartime Service

Edward enlisted in the Royal Sussex Regiment as Private 1524   as a Territorial Force soldier in1st/5th Battalion (based in Hastings ) about Aug 1912 (serials 1450 was issued on 5 Feb 1912 & serial 1606 on 5 Feb 1913).


Edward went to France with his Battalion on 18 Feb 1915 to join 2nd Brigade, 1st Division near Ypres. The division to part in the Battle of Auber (9 May 1915)and the Battle of Loos (25 Sep-8 Oct 1915) before in 1916 moving to Take part in the Battles of the Somme at Albert (1-13 Jul) and Bazentin Ridge (14-17 Jul).


Edward was wounded in the last action and died of his wounds on 19 Jul 1916.
