Pre War

Sidney Arthur Grant was born in Stratford, London on 28 May 1889 to Frederick William and Frances Elizabeth Grant. On the 1891 Census he was living with his widowed mother (who was working as a laundress) and siblings at 23 Sylvan Gate, West Ham (Forest Gate). He gave his occupation as Stonemason on his enlistment sheet. On the 1911 Census he was already serving as a stoker in the Royal Navy and was on board the Derwent (a Torpedo Boat Destroyer) situated at Grimbsy, on the River Humber.

Wartime Service

He first joined the Royal Navy on 8 July 1908 for 12 years. He served on several ships including Acheron, Vulcan, Pembroke II, St George and Blenheim. On 1 January 1915 he was serving on HMS Formidable when it was sunk by German submarine U24 which fired two torpedoes, one of which struck Formidable close to the forward funnel.  She lost steam and listed to starboard. Boats were launched but more than 500 men were left on board.  His body was not recovered for burial.
