Pre War
Reginald Walter Grant was born on 6 May 1876 in Norwood, Surrey, the son of Alexander and Marion Grant (nee Stirling). He was baptised on 15 May 1879 at Christchurch, Norwood, Surrey. He had two sisters, Florence and Helena.
His father had died in 1886 and on the 1891 Census Reginald was listed as a scholar boarding at Brighton College, Brighton, Sussex. By 1901 he was living with his widowed mother at 7 Gipsy Hill, Norwood, where he, his sister and mother were all said to be 'living on own means'. They also had a servant.
He married Florence Mabel Schilling on 20 September 1906 at All Saints Church, Upper Norwood. He gave his occupation as merchant and his address as Beulah Spa, Norwood. Their daughter Dorothy was born in 1907 and on the 1911 Census he was living with his wife and daughter at Broadbridge Heath, Horsham, Sussex where he was living on 'private means' and employing two servants.
At the time of probate following his death, his address was given as 20 St Dunstan's Hill, London and his widow later lived at Wyndcliffe, Shooters Way Lane, Berkhamsted, Herts.
Wartime Service
In July 1915 he received a short service commission in the 8th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment. and was later promoted to Captain.
He served in France from 1 September 1915 and on the headstone of his private grave are the words "Wounded at Loos". He also served in Salonika from September to November 1916. (according to Medal Rolls Index Card).
He died on 26 November 1918 (cause unknown) at 3 Randolph Road, Maida Vale, Middx and is buried in Paddington Old Cemetery, Kilburn, London
Additional Information
His widow received pay owing of £248 11s 4d. She was granted probate of his estate on 12 May 1919 with effects of £209 1s 0d.
