Pre War

Walter William Solomon Whybrow was born on 13th February 1882 in Great Dunmow, Essex, son of Frederick William Whybrow a, Brewers Labourer and Sarah Emily Whybrow (nee Goodhew). One of six children although two died in infancy.


He was Baptised on 12th March 1882, at St Mary the Virgin, Great Dunmow, Essex.


1891 Census records Walter aged 9, living with his grandparents Walter and Lois Whybrow and their children at, Parsonage Downs, Great Dunmow, Essex.


His mother Sarah died in mid-1898, in West Ham, Essex, aged 36.


1901 Census, Walter (19), is employed as a Postman, living with his widowed grandmother Lois and his uncle Ernest (27) at Parsonage Downs, Great Dunmow, Essex. His sister Lois Louisa (10) is also living with them.


Walter married Daisey Emily Bealey of Exeter, the daughter of John and Maria Bealey on 24th April 1905, in Cheshunt, Herts. They went on to have three children, Walter John, Rosy Louise and Charles Ernest James.


1911 Census records Walter (29) married to Daisey, with two sons and a daughter, employed as a Rural Postman, living in Church Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.


His wife Daisey died on 14th May 1916 aged 33.

Wartime Service

Walter enlisted in Cheshunt, Herts, posted to the Essex Regiment and issued with the service number 15456. On completion of his training he was sent to France, with the 11th Battalion, landing at Boulogne on 30th August 1915. Seeing action on the Western front. He was Killed in Action on 13th November 1916, aged 36, at the Attack of The Quadrilateral, part of the Battle of the Somme (1st July – 18th November 1916). At the time of his death, Walter was serving with “D” Company, 13th Battalion, Essex Regiment (West Ham Pals).


Walter is buried in Serre Road Cemetery No 2. Beaumont-Hamel, France. Grave Ref; I. G. 23.

Additional Information

Miss Amy Debenham (Guardian), of Cheshunt Park, Cheshunt, Herts, was awarded a pension of 19/- a week from 9th July 1917, for the benefit of his three children and his effects of £4-13s-01, pay owing and his war gratuity of £9-10s-00d, also for the benefit of the children.


The Headstone inscription “FOR THERE IS MERCY WITH THEE THEREFORE SHALT THOU BE FEARED” was requested by Miss Amy Debenham, Cheshunt, Herts. His children’s Guardian.


He is also commemorated on the family grave in Cheshunt Cemetery,


There is a memorial to the 13th Battalion, Essex Regiment (West Ham Pals) adjacent to the main entrance to West Ham Football Ground, Upton Park.
