Pre War

Gazeley Grave was born in Berkhamsted in 1886, the son of William and Julia Grace (nee Daniels) and one of 14 children, although one had died by 1911.

On the 1891 Census the family were living at George Street, Berkhamsted where his father was a chemical labourer. They had moved to neighbouring village Northchurch by 1901 and were residing at 24 Ellesmere Road. Fifteen year old Gazeley was then working as a office post boy.

He married Emily Sewell in Berkhamsted in 1908 and on the 1911 Census he was living with his wife and one year old daughter Phyllis at 85 George Street, Berkhamsted where he was working as a commercial clerk with a chemical manufacturer (probably Cooper & Nephews).

They later had two more daughters, Olive in 1911 and Mary in 1915 and lived at 78 George Street, Berkhamsted.

Wartime Service

He initially joined the Bedfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 31750, later being transferred to the Welsh Regiment.

He was killed in action on 22 October 1918 and is buried in Highland Cemetery, Le Cateau, France.

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £11 and pay owing of £28 11s 7d. She also received a pension of £1 8s 7d a week for herself and her three daughters.
