Pre War
John Whittle was born on 4 April 1892 in Wallaroo, South Australia, the son of John Petrie and Sarah Ellen Whittle of Wallaroo.
He worked as Carpenter.
Wartime Service
He enlisted on 20 April 1915 as a Private in the 16th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement. His unit embarked from Adelaide, South Australia on board RMS Morea on 26 August 1915.
He was later commissioned on 12 March 1916 as 2nd Lieutenant with the 48th Battalion, and promoted again to Lieutenant on 15 June 1916. He was wounded in action on 6 August 1916 and recovered but was killed in action on 29 March 1918.
Additional Information
His mother, Mrs S E Whittle, Wallaroo, South Australia, ordered his headstone inscription: "IN MEMORY OF THE DEARLY LOVED SON OF J. P. & S. E. WHITTLE WALLAROO, S.A."
