Pre War
Bert/Bertie Whiting was born in the early part of 1884, in Edmonton, Middlesex, son of Samual Whiting a, General Labourer and Susannah Whiting. One of ten children although six died in childhood.
He was Baptised on 23rd March 1884, at St James Church, Upper Edmonton, Middx.
1891 Census records Bert aged 7, living with his parents, and brother Charlie (1) at 10 Shakespear Road, Edmonton, Middx.
1901 Census, Bert (17) is working as a General Labourer, living with his parents, brother Charlie (11) and sister May (7) at 13 Shakespear Road, Edmonton, Middx.
No 1911 Census for Bert was found, his parents and brother Charlie (21) are living at 14 Raynham Road, Edmonton, Middx.
Bert married Jane Elizabeth Smith the daughter of Alfred and Sarah Ann Smith on 18th September 1911, at the Registry Office, White Hart Lane, Tottenham, Middx. They went on to have three children Albert, Harry and Gladys Ada.
Wartime Service
Bert travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist posted to the 32nd (East Ham) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) with the Service number GS/48498.
The 32nd Battalion was formed in London in October 1915, by the Mayor and Borough of East Ham. On completion of their training, they proceeded to France in May 1916, seeing action on the Western front.
Bert was Killed in Action on 22nd September 1917, during the Battle of the Menin Road, (20th – 25th September 1917). He has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium, to the missing. Panel 28 to 30.
Additional Information
Jane received a grant of £5, on 16th October 1917, and a widow’s pension of £1-6s-3d, a week from 15th April 1918, and his effects of £1-4s-11d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3.
