Pre War

Born on 3 Oct 1889 in Springfield, Essex son of Arthur Brookes and Sarah Elizabeth (Durrant) Straight. Educated at Haileybury College 1904-08. He emigrated on 16 Aug 1913 from Liverpool to Montreal and was a land agent in Canada.

Wartime Service

He had served 3½ years as Lieutenant in 5th Essex. On the outbreak of war, he volunteered in Valcartier, Quebec, Canada on 23 Sep 1914 as Sergeant (21825) in the Canadian Infantry but regained a commission in the 12th Essex. Embarked from Avonmouth and arrived in the Dardanelles on 25 Apr 1915. He was killed in action at W Beach during the evacuation.
