Pre War

Born on the 12th September 1895 in High Cross, Herts. Son of Charles and Emily (Mardell) White. He was Baptised on the 4th October 1895 in High Cross, Herts.


The 1901 Census records William, aged 5, at school and living with his parents and sister at Standon Green End, High Cross, Herts. The in 1911 as 15 and living with his parents, brother and two sisters at Standon Green End, High Cross, Herts. His occupation is given as a farm labourer.


William enlisted in Hertford. Attested in to the 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, with the service No 25344. 

Wartime Service

The Herts & Essex Observer in January 1915 recorder that he went to the front in July of that year and that he had previously been gassed and wounded, before he was killed in action in August 1918 at the second battle of the Somme – The Battle of Albert.
