Pre War

Frederick George Goodyear was born 1894, the youngest son to William Goodyear, who was a Coal and Builders Merchant, and Clarissa (nee Combridge).  The family were living at Dalkeith Villas, Ballards Lane, Finchley. Frederick was baptised on 18 Jan 1910, St Paul, Finchley. 


On the 1911 Census he was attending Aldenham School , Herts aged 17 and after leaving he was training to be an Actuary. He had two older brothers, John Broderick (1879 -1911) & William Edward, and 5 older sisters.

Wartime Service

At the outbreak of war Frederick enlisted on 8 Aug 1914 in Honourable Artillery Company as a private (1064) and by the 18 Sep 1914 he was in France with the HAC until 27 Oct 1915. (HAC provided 2 Battalions of Infantry as well as Batteries of Artillery). He was commissioned 7 Oct 1915 in the London Regiment and was posted to 2/24 County of London) Battalion (the Queens).  This Unit landed in Le Havre in Jun 1916 but moved to the Salonika Front in Nov 1916.


He was awarded Military Cross on 17 Apr 1917. The following is the citation for that award: “His Majesty the King has been graciously pleased to award the Military Cross in recognition of conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the Field. For conspicuous gallantry during a raid. He rushed the enemy trenches and pursued a party of the enemy into a swamp. Where he effected the capture of six prisoners.”

The Battalion moved to Egypt in Jul 1917 and took part in the Palestine Campaign. Frederick died on 8th Dec 1917 from wounds received during operations in the capture and defence of Jerusalem.

Probate £294 2s 1d to Sister Claire Helen William Edward served in London Regiment both as a Private (13th Battalion London and as a Lieutenant (24th Battalion London Regiment)*1 and survived the war.
