Harpenden Town Memorial

Pre War

Lewis Thomas was born in London in 1898 to Albert William and Katharine Goodwin. At some time he lived in Harpenden.

Wartime Service

Lewis had been enlisted in 4th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment as private 30497.


He was promoted to Corporal at some time during his service. In Oct 1917 the 4th Battalion were positioned at Ypres and on 30 Oct were in positions near Poelcappelle. An attack was launched at 0530 but the ground was heavy and only about 200 yards advance was made. The other rank casualties on this day were: killed 52 wounded 180 and missing 23.


The remains of Lewis were not recovered and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Ypres.
