Pre War
Arthur was born in 1887 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire to Samuel Goodwin, Keeper at a Blast Furnace, and Eliza (nee Bolland).
On the 1891 census Arthur together with father, mother, elder sister Florence Mary Jane, elder brother Samuel Henry and younger brothers Ernest & Harold were living at Derby Road, Hasland, Chesterfield. By the 1901 Census the family were now living at 17, Ashfield Road, Hasland. On the 1911 Census Arthur was employed as Coal Miner Corporal (in charge of a district in a mine).
Wartime Service
Arthur enlisted for the Royal Field Artillery as Gunner 27705 and went to France on 8 Jul 1915 (Unit not stated). At some time he joined 2/1st (Howitzer) East Lancs. Brigade. In May 1916 this Unit was renumbered as CCCXXX (330) Brigade and was allocated to 66 Division.
He gained promotion to Acting Bombardier. Arthur was wounded in 1916 and on 28 Sep 1917 when at Passchendaele. Arthur died of his wounds on 11 Dec 1917 at Barnet war Hospital. He is buried in Bells Hill Burial ground, Barnet.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £15 and arrears of £20 was paid to his mother.
