Alfred Goodman was born on 26 Dec 1881 and baptised on 22 Jan 1882 in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire, the son and eldest child of George and Jane Goodman and one of 19 children, only six of whom survived to adulthood (according to their 1911 Census form).

On the 1891 Census the family were living at Yeading, Hayes, Middlesex where his father  was working as a Horseman on a Farm. By 1901 they had moved to 4 Sadler's Buildings, Lower Common, Putney, London, when both Alfred and his father were working as General Labourers. They remained there on the 1911 Census and Alfred was then employed as a golf club groundsman.

His parents later lived at 28 Pentlow Street, Putney, London. SW15 and 62 Railway Street, Barnes.

Wartime Service

Alfred enlisted on 3 Nov 1915 at Kingston-on-Thames and joined the 4th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment.

He left Devonport on 28 August 1916 and arrived in Salonika on 9 Sep 1916, joining his Battalion in the field on 16 September.   He was accidentally wounded in the field on 9 October with a gunshot wound to the head and died of his wounds on 18 October 1916 at Salonika.

He was initially buried at Guverne Cemetery and later 'concentrated' to Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria. Greece.
