Son of Henry James and Elizabeth (nee ADDISON) GOODING.
His parents married 31 March 1878 at St Thomas’, Bethnal Green, London. Henry died 14 December 1943 in Watford aged 85, and was buried 18 December in North Watford Cemetery; Elizabeth died 24 June 1946 in Watford, and was buried 28 June, also in North Watford Cemetery.
Fred was born 1 December 1893 in Bromley-by-Bow, London, and baptised 21 December 1893 at St Mary’s, Bromley St Leonard, London. He attended first Callow Land Infants’ School, Watford; then Callowland Board School from 8 January 1900 to 11 October 1901, when he transferred to Alexandra School, Watford. He resided in Watford.
On the 1901 Census, aged 8 he lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1911 Census, a clerk aged 18 he lived in Leyton, Essex.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Watford, and was formerly 25499 Bedfordshire Regiment.
He was entitled to the Victory and British War medals, awarded the Military Medal, and was presumed killed in action.
Additional Information
There is an In Memoriam to Fred in the West Herts and Watford Observer dated 30 November 1918.
Unfortunately, Fred’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
