Cyril White was born in Ealing, Middlesex in 1895 to Frederic Charles White, a solicitor, and Mildred Sarah (nee Hutchings).
On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Cyril, Geoffrey C (born 1896) at 19, Drayton Green Road, Ealing. There was also a nursery governess and a cook.
On the 1911 Census Cyril, was an accountant’s articled clerk, and was living with his mother and sister Erica Mildred (born 1905) at "Hillcrest," Potters Bar, Middx.
Wartime Service
Enlisted at London in 1/5 (City of London) Battalion (London Rifle Brigade) while resident in Potters Bar.
No Service Record was found for Cyril. His Service number 9687 suggests he enlisted after Dec 1913 and around the declaration of war in Aug 1914 (the Battalion reset it’s numbering to 1 after reaching 9999 and so 35 was issued on 6 Aug 1914 but after 9687). Cyril together with 10th (Service) Battalion landed at Le Havre, France on 5/6 Nov 1914. Deployed to the Ypres Sector as part of 11 Brigade 4 Division they were to take part in the 2nd Battle of Ypres (22 Apr- 25 May 1915) particularly the Battle of St Julien (24 April-4 May 1915). It was during the early stages of this last Battle that Cyril was wounded, and although evacuated to No 3 Canadian Field Ambulance where he died on 25 Apr 1915.
Additional Information
War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £5-7s-6d was paid to his father Frederic White (Solicitor). Probate figure of £542 also left to his father. Dependants Pension was paid to his mother following the death of his father.
His father, also ordered his headstone inscription: "Of Potters Bar, Middlesex And Underneath Are The Everlasting Arms" while living at "Hillcrest" Potters Bar, Middx.
