Arthur Joseph white was born late 1897, in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, son of Harry George White a Labourer and Emily Louisa White (nee Thompson). One of four children.


Harry George White (a Lighterman at the time) married Emily Louisa Thompson, on 1st April 1893, at the Church of Saint John the Baptist in the Parish of Plumstead, Kent.


Arthur was Baptised on 8th May 1901, in Waltham Cross, Herts, with his sister Maude Ellen.


1901 Census records Arthur aged 3, living with his mother, brother George (7), sisters Mable (4) and Maude (1) at 35 Queens Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. The Census record states the family are living on Charity and the Parish.


His father is recorded on the 1911 Census returns as an in-patinate at St Albans Hospital. His father Harry George White died in October 1901, aged 35.


1911 Census, Arthur (13), is at school, living with his Widowed mother, brother George (17), sisters Mabel (14) and Maude (11) at, 9 May Cottages, Railway Road, Waltham Cross, Herts.

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted on 7th June 1916, joining the Royal Flying Corps, issued with the service number 30247 and poster to No 7. Squadron. On completion of his training, he was sent to France, arriving on 9th November 1916, serving with 4th Kite Balloon Section, Royal Flying Corps. Arthur was wounded and admitted to Hospital on 21st October 1918, and died of his wounds on 27th October 1918. He is buried in  Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France. Grave Ref; VI. D. 15.


The Royal Flying Corps became the Royal Air Force in April 1918.

Additional Information

His effects of £3-06s-00d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £13-10s-00d, went to his mother Emily.


His Headstone inscription “REST IN PEACE” was requested by Mrs. Emily Louisa White, of 9 Railway Road, Waltham Cross, Herts. (His mother).


His RFC/RAF service record survived and is available on-line.


His elder sister Mable Emily Louisa White married Sidney William Barker in 1916, Sidney was Killed in Action during the Egypt/Palestine Campaign on 2nd November 1917, he served with the Suffolk Regiment.
