No Service Record was found for Arthur but he transferred to the Lincolnshire Regiment at some time probably following his initial training and went to France to join 1st Battalion in the field. His death was accepted as being 6 Apr 1918 (according to his record of Soldiers Effects and his Pension Card). CWGC have registered his name on the Thiepval Memorial. There is also a soldier Arthur Smith (died 1 Jul 1916, 2 Battalion Lincolnshire Regt) recorded on the same panel which may have been the source of confusion.
