Pre War
Guy was born on 17 Nov 1889 in Harpenden the younger son to Frederick Westwood, a carpenter, and Sarah (nee Nash). They were living on Lower Cravells Road, Harpenden. By the 1901 Census Frederick now described himself as a grain merchant still at Cravells Road.
On the 1911 Census Guy gave his occupation as mason. Guy married Edith M Jennings in early 1916. He was a keen footballer.
Wartime Service
Guy was enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 26979 and was at some time transferred to 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment.
He went to France (probably to join 6th Northants, who had been in France from 26 Jul 1915). He was killed in action on 17 Jan 1917 during tactical actions on the Ancre.
Additional Information
His widow, Mrs. E. M. Westwood, "Eastleigh," 83, Coleswood Rd., Harpenden, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: “FAITHFUL UNTIL DEATH ALWAYS IN OUR THOUGHTS”. War Gratuity of £3 and arrears of £19s 11d paid to his widow.
Guy is also commemorated on a headstone in Harpenden (St. Nicholas) Churchyard, which reads:
