Pre War

Walter Henry was born in 1895 in Holloway, London, and baptised at Great Gaddesden, Hertford on 11 Aug that year. His father was Henry John Gill, a Farrier & Blacksmith, and mother (Rose nee Groome).


On the 1901 census they were living at Leyton Road, Harpenden and by 1911 the family were at Cravells Road, Harpenden and Walter was employed as a Plait Porter. He had 2 youngers brothers and four sisters.

Wartime Service

Walter was enlisted in the 5th Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 6318 in 1916 and was transferred to the Leicester Regiment as Private 330343.


He went to France from Folkestone on 29 Nov 1916 and Joined 8th Battalion in the field on 12 Dec 1916. At some time Walter was captured and it was a Prisoner of War that his death was reported at Charleville on 23 Sep 1918 by the Germans.

Additional Information

Henry John (father) had served as Farrier Sergeant in the Boer War (Imperial Yeomanry 42nd company 12th battalion no 5807) and WW1,Royal Horse Artillery and Royal Field Artillery 89954. Stanley, younger brother, also served in WWI as a Staff Sergeant in the Royal Army Service Corps M/31326.
