Pre War

John Gilbert Gill was born in 1896, the son of John and Annie Gill, and baptised on 12 June 1896 at Leytonstone United Free Church,  Waltham Forest, Essex.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at 9 Salisbury Road, Leyton, Essex and his father was working as a Linen Agent. By 1911 they had moved to 30 Grove Green Road, Leytonstone, at which time 14 year old Gilbert was working as a Clerk at a Felt Maker. 


His parents later lived at 29 Herbert Street, Hemel Hempstead, Herts.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Chelsea, London and served with the 4th (London) Field Ambulance,  Royal Army Medical Corps.


He was killed in action on 18 August 1917 and is buried at  Brandhoek New Cemetery, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His father, Mr John E Gill, 29 Herbert Street, Hemel Hempstead, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "I HAVE ONLY DONE MY DUTY AS A MAN IS BOUND TO DO "GIBBIE"". His mother received a war gratuity of £14 and pay owing of £10 18s 3d.
