Pre War
Edward GILL was born in 1886, in Orwell, Cambridgeshire, son of Daniel Gill, an Agricultural Labour and Mary Ann Gill (nee Collis). One of their eight children although two died in childhood.
1891 Census records Edward aged 5, at school, living with his parents three sisters and two brothers, in High Street, Orwell, Cambridgeshire.
1901 Census, Edward aged 14, had left school and was working as a Labourer at the Brickworks, living with his parents, brother George (21), sisters Martha (16), Mary (12) and Emma (5), still in High Street, Orwell.
Edward married Sophia Maria Bennett, the daughter of John and Martha Bennett, in July 1906, the marriage was registered in St Albans, Herts. They went on to have two children.
1911 Census records Edward (24) married to Sophia, they have two children Doris (3) and Harold (1), and are living in Shenley Road, White Lion Lane, London Colney, Herts. Edward is working as a Bricklayer’s Assistant.
Wartime Service
Edward travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlisted in November 1915, posted to the Hertfordshire Regiment, issued with the service number 5968, after seven months of training in Tring went to France. Edward died on 14th November 1916, aged 31, of wounds received in action. He is buried in Warloy-Billon Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Grave Ref: IV. D. 1.
His wife was informed of his death by the Records Office at Fern Cottage, Broad Colney, near St Albans, Herts.
Additional Information
Sophia received a widow’s pension of 22s/11d, (£1-02s-11d) a week from 28th May 1917, and his effects of £2-14s-08d, pay owing, and his war gratuity of £3.
