Pre War

Charles Henry Raymond West was born in Simla, India, on 27 January 1894, the son of Charles and Agnes West. His father was Assistant Secretary to the Government of India Army Department. (Both his parents had also been born in India).


On the 1911 Census he was living with his father and sister Marie at Clan-Rye, Cross Oak Road, Berkhamsted. His mother was not listed with them. 


He was educated at Berkhamsted School and left in 1913. He also played  for the Hertfordshire County Cricket Club. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted on 15 August 1914 and joined the Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex) Regiment, 6th (Special Reserve) Battalion as 2nd Lieutenant. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 April 1915 and attached to the 4th Battalion. 


Charles served with the Expeditionary Force in France from 5 May 1915 and was killed in action on 3 June 1915, aged 21. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium. 

Additional Information

His father received pay owing of £41 11s 3d.

His older brother Stewart served as Captain with the Royal Engineers (Railway Corps) in East Africa and survived the war.
