Mark Wells was born on 14 February 1892 in Rotherhithe, Surrey, the son of Mark and Louisa Well, and baptised on 17 April 1892 at Deptford, Kent.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 9 Brodia Road, Stoke Newington at which time his father's occupation was given as Police Sergeant.
By the 1911 Census Mark Wells was working as a footman for Mr Howard Vyse at Stoke Place, Stoke Green, Slough. His parents were then living at The Beehive Public House, Honey Lane, Cholsey, Oxon where his father was listed as Police pensioner and Innkeeper.
His parents later lived at The Greyhound, Thame, Oxon and Mark lived in Welwyn, Herts.
Wartime Service
He enlisted at Watford, Herts and served with the 6th Battalion, The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment).
He was killed in action in France on 27 August 1918, aged 26 and is buried at Quarry Cemetery, Montauban, France.
Additional Information
His father, Mr M Wells, 43 North Street, Thame, Oxon. ordered his headstone inscription: "UNTIL THE DAY BREAKS & THE SHADOWS FLEE AWAY". N.B. the Army Registers of Soldiers Effects gives the date of death as 30 June 1918, although CWGC gives 27 August 1918. His mother received a war gratuity of £8 and pay owing of £6 10s 8d. A pension card was found but gives no indication of any pension being paid to his family.
