Pre War
Herbert Charles Cutter was born in 1899 in Hemel Hempstead, Herts, the son of Walter Herbert and Maria Cutler, of The Dell, Felden Rd. Two Waters, Hemel Hempstead, Herts. He had a younger sister Beryl and another sibling who died in infancy.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Gade Villa, Moor End, Boxmoor and his father was working as a Printer (Compositor) at John Dickinson & Co Ltd at Apsley Mills. By 1911 they had moved to 112 Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead, where his father continued to work as a Compositor for a Stationery Manufacturer (John Dickinson & Co Ltd)
Herbert left school in 1912 and also went to work for Dickinsons. He was too young to enlist at the outbreak of war but joined the Hemel Hempstead Volunteer Force when it was formed in 1916, whilst continuing to work at Apsley Mills.
Wartime Service
In early 1918 Herbert enlisted in Hertford and joined The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) and was posted to the 1st/22nd Battalion. The date of his arrival in France is not known but would have been after a few months of basic training.
Between 21-23 August he fought in the Battle of Albert which successfully pushed the German front line back along a 50 mile stretch. A few days later the Battalion were assembled for another assault, this time at Baupame. Herbert was killed in action on 30 August 1918, aged 19, and is buried at the Combles Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £7 15s 5d. His mother received a pension of 5 shillings a week from 23 March 1919.
