Pre War

Ernest Cutler was born in Tring in 1899 to Arthur  Ernest Cutler, a baker, and Rose (nee Geary).


On the 1901 Census Arthur and Rose were living at 10 Charles Street, Tring.


On the 1911 Census the family of parents and Ernest were living at 46, King Street, Tring. No record was found for Ernest.


As a lad, he was a keen member of the YMCA and took part in their gymnastic displays.

Wartime Service

In Feb 1917 Ernest Cutler was enlisted as Private 41094 .  e was attached to the Bedfordshire Regiment and went to France at the beginning of 1918.  Subsequently, he was transferred to  7th (Service ) Battalion, Norfolk Regiment, a component of 35 Brigade, 12 (Eastern) Division.


In Aug 1918 35 Brigade were the right flank of the Division during the Battle of Albert (2nd Battles of the Somme 1918) and followed a withdrawal of Germans on from the Ancre, 7/Norfolks with 9/Essex were able to move to their objectives gaining 2 Miles. The Division attacked again on 22 August, pushing right across the wilderness of the old Somme battlefield, capturing Meaulte, Mametz, Carnoy, Hardecourt and Faviere Wood, which was reached after a week’s continuous fighting. The Division had made an advance of another 15000 yards. It was during this last action on 22 Aug 1918 that Ernest was killed.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £6 10s and arrears of £7 18s 4d was paid to his father. Record has been transcribed as Cutter.
