Pre War

Frederick William Gilbey was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on 7th May 1890, son of Frederick Gilbey a, General Labourer and Emily Gilbey (nee Gearing). One of five children.


Frederick Jr. was Baptised on 29th June 1890, in Cheshunt, Herts.


1891 Census records Frederick Jr. aged 11 months, living with his parents, Stepsister Rose (9), Stepbrother John (7), and sister Clara (4) at, 3 Brook Villas, Cheshunt Street, Cheshunt, Herts.


1901 Census records Frederick Jr. aged 10, living with his parents, Stepbrother John (17), Sisters Clara (14), and Daisy (8) at, 205 High Street, Cheshunt, Herts.


1911 Census. Frederick (20) is working as a Builders Labourer, living with his parents, and Sister Daisy (18), still at 205 High Street, Cheshunt. 

Wartime Service

Frederick enlisted at Cheshunt, posted to the Royal Fusiliers (City of London regiment) with the service number GS/52319. On Completion of his training and home service duties he arrived on the Western Front with the 24th (2nd Sportsman’s) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) on the 4th March 1917. He was transferred to the 2nd Battalion, Royal fusiliers on the 20th March 1917.


He died on the 26th April 1917, of wounds received in action, possible at the Battle of the Scarpe. (9th April - 4th May 1917).

Additional Information

His mother Emily received a dependents pension of 7/6 a week from 5th February 1918.


His mother Emily married John Anderson in New Southgate, London, on 12th April 1880, they had two children Rose & John Jr. Husband John died in 1885. Emily remarried on 25th December 1886, in Cheshunt, Herts, to Frederick Gilbey.
