Pre War

George William GILBERT was born on 28th November 1893, in Bromley, Kent, son of George William Gilbert, he was employed in the Coal Trade and Maria Gilbert (nee Roberts). One of their six children.

1901 Census records George Jr. aged 7, living with his parents, sister Elsie (9) and brother Harold (3), at 8 South Street, Bromley, Kent. His three elder sisters Harriett, Alice and Kate, had left home by the 1901 Census.

1911 Census, George Jr. 17, is employed as a Bookstall Clerk, living with his parents, sister Elsie (19), and brother Harold (13), still at 8 South Street, Bromley.

 

Wartime Service

George Jr. enlisted at Bedford, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment and issued with the service number 33010. On completion of his training George was sent to France, seeing action on the Western Front, he was reported missing presumed dead-on 23rd April 1917, aged 23, during the Battle of Arras, (Battle of Arras 9th April – 16th May 1917) he has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Arras Memorial in France to the missing. Bay 5.

At the time of his death, he was serving with “D” Company, 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.

Additional Information

His mother Maria Gilbert’s dependent’s pension record card records her living at “Salterton” Seaton Road, London Colney, Herts. No weekly pension allowance was found.

His effects of £3-08s-05d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3, went to his father George Gilbert.

His father George William Gilbert died on 17th April 1920, aged 67 in London Colney, Herts.
