Pre War

Only son of Henry Joseph Anthony Gielgud, merchant, of 12, Lupus Street, St George's Square, London. Born Feb. 12, 1881, at Bedford Park, Chiswick. After school at Aldenham, he went to Pembroke College, Cambridge, Oct. 1900., gaining his Classics degree in 1903.

He married in 1912 to Katharine Mary Alston Kilpin.

He became a Chartered Accountant and was secetery to Leach's Argentine Estates, Ltd., and Argentine Iron and Steel Co. Ltd.

Wartime Service

He became a 2nd Lieutenant on 9th Dec 1914, captain 1915 and Major 1917.

His military cross was gazetted 26 Sep 1916 and the citation read: ‘For conspicuous gallantry in action. He showed great energy and powers of leadership during an attack, which resulted in the capture of part of the enemy's front line. He afterwards consolidated the position won and organised his defences with great skill and coolness.’

He was last seen on 30 Nov 1917, when as Acting Lt/Col leading 7th Battalion, ‘surrounded by the enemy and fighting desperately, although wounded.’ This was his presumed date of death having initially declared Missing.
