*1 From our research this man is the most likely to be commemorated on the Harpenden memorials. The rank and Essex Regiment are confirmed on the Harpenden memorial and also in the St Albans Cathedral Diocese records, however, both only give C Wells as the name. Investigations of the CWGC, SDITGW, Silver War Badge records and others, do not provide an alternative name, but we recognise that his connection to Harpenden has yet to be proved. 


The Soldiers Died In The Great War (SDITGW) database records that he was born in Dover and was living in East Ham, Essex when he enlisted there.
