Arthur was born in 1896 in Northchurch, the youngest son of Frederick Welling and Alice (nee Miller), and one of six children. He was baptised on 7 February 1897 at Northchurch, Berkhamsted.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Orchard End, Northchurch where his father was working as a general labourer.
His mother died and on the 1911 Census he was living with his widowed father, brother Walter and sister Ethel in Orchard End. Arthur was then working as a labourer.
Wartime Service
Arthur initially enlisted with the Northamptonshire Regiment as Private 27366, later being transferred to the 74th Company of the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). This unit was formed 17 March 1916 and fought on the Somme in 1916, at Messines in 1917 and by August 1917 was involved in the Battle of Passchendaele.
Arthur was killed in action on 8 August 1917, aged 20. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Additional Information
His mother received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £1 5s 2d. She also received a pension of 7 shillings a week.
His elder brother Walter served in the Berkshire Regt and died of wounds on 29 September 1916.
