Pre War
John was born in Hatfield, Hertfordshire, in 1881, the son of John William and Louisa Welch (nee Myers). At the time of his birth his parents were living at North Road Cottages, Hatfield, Herts.
1891 Census records John aged 10, at school, living with his parents, brothers Henry 8, Frederick 6, Joseph 4, and Arthur 1, at 23 Creswell Road, Clarkenwell, London.
By 1901 now aged 19 the family has moved to Islington, John was working as a Tilers Labourer, still living with his parents, brothers Henry 17, Frederick 15, Joseph 13 Arthur 11, Alfred 6, Thomas 4 and James 2, at 12 Crescent Avenue, Islington, London.
On 14th February 1904 John Married Minnie Eugenie Nicholas in St Andrews Church, Islington, London. (Minnie originated from Torquay in Devon).
1911 Census records John Married to Minnie and they have
two children John 6 and Minnie 2 and living at 108 Pembroke Street, Islington.
London.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in St Pancras, London, joining the 16th Battalion, Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consorts Own).
John died of his wounds on 5th September 1918.
The 16th Battalion, Rifle Brigade was formed in St Pancreas, London, on 2nd April 1915.
