Biography
The following text was transcribed from the The Edmundian (1814-1819) – The contemporary magazine of St Edmund’s College:
Charles Wiedner was the son of J. F. W. Wiedner, Esq., J.P., who was Lord Mayor of Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1912 and 1913. After leaving St. Edmund's he began his commercial career, in which he rapidly achieved a considerable measure of success. Up to the time when he joined the colours, with the R.F.A., he was in a responsible position in the well known firm of Messrs.
Finlay & Co., Limited, of which Company his father is Chairman. With praiseworthy enterprise and energy he was also studying Medicine, both at Manchester University and under private. tuition. After some time of service in the Artillery he became an Instructor, On the 5th of June of last year his Battery was in action at the Battle of Messines and he was killed instantaneously by a shell. His comrades buried him in the Pallas Farm Cemetery, near Kennel.
His home was in Manchester, where he leaves his widow (nee Winter of a well known Catholic family of Leeds and Harrogate) and one little daughter. His wife and all his relatives are assured of the sympathy and prayers of all his Edmundian friends.
