Pre War

Thomas William Weedon was born on 18 September 1879 in Leighton Buzzard, Beds, the only son of Thomas and Elizabeth Weedon, and was baptised on 25 January 1881 at Great Berkhamsted, Herts. He was one of eight children.


On the 1881 Census the family were living near the King's Head in Berkhamsted and his father was working as a gardener. They remained in Berkhamsted in 1891 and 1901 and were then living at 10 Highfield Road. Thomas was then working as a bricklayer's labourer.


He married Alice Lovell on 27 May 1901 at Great Berkhamsted, Herts and by the time of the 1911 Census they were living at 2 Holliday Street, Berkhamsted with their only son Arthur, aged 8. Thomas was then working as a bricklayer. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Watford and joined the Northamptonshire Regiment, serving with the 7th Battalion in France. 


He was killed in action on 31 July 1917, aged 37,  but has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Additional Information

His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £17s 4d. She also received a pension of 18s 9d a week.
