Pre War
Sydney Russell George was born on 9 August 1897 in Hemel Hempstead, the son of Henry and Louisa George and baptised on 19 September 1907 in Hemel Hempstead.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at 92 Cotterells Road, Hemel Hempstead when his father was working at the local paper mill as a Mill Hand.
Although unable to find the family on the 1911 Census, his parents later lived at 97 Bury Road, Hemel Hempstead on pension records and were still living in Bury Road in 1939.
According to local sources he was employed at John Dickinson & Co, Apsley Mills, in the Card Department prior to enlistment.
Wartime Service
He initially enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment (Reg. No. 31548) later transferring to the Machine Gun Corps.
According to local sources he was wounded three times, gassed twice and once buried alive for three days. He was discharged in April 1919 suffering from the effects of gas and died at home on 29 September 1920, aged 23.
He is buried in Hemel Hempstead (Heath Lane) Cemetery.
