Pre War

Ronald Alfred George was born in 1895, in Chipperfield, Hertfordshire, son of Henry George, an Agricultural Worker and Annie (nee Durrant) George. One of three children, Nellie (B 1894) and Dorothy (B 1899).


Ronald was Baptised on 4 August 1895, in the Parish Church, Chipperfield, Herts.


1901 Census records Ronald aged 5, living with his parents and two sisters, in Chapel Croft, Chipperfield, Herts. His aunt Nellie Durrant was living with the family.


1911 Census records Ronald aged 15, working as a paper colourer, living with his parents and sister Dorothy in, Chapel Croft, Chipperfield. The family had a Boarder Thomas Ryder living with them.  

Wartime Service

Ronald enlisted at Bedford, Bedfordshire, posted to the Bedfordshire Regiment with the service number 23298. He served on the Western Front, and was Killed in Action on 23 October 1918, at the Battle of the Selle, (17 – 25 October 1918). The Battalion was North East of Le Cateau at the time of his death.  

Additional Information

His mother, Mrs. A. George, Chaple Croft, Chipperfield, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: “THY WILL BE DONE”. His mother Annie received a Dependents Pension of 7/- a week from 13 May 1919, and his effects of £9-00s-9d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £14.
