Albert Henry Gentle was born on 21 Jun 1885 in Chiswick (baptised 5 Jul 1885 at St Andrews, Fulham) to George Thomas Gentle, a carman, and Emily Jane (nee Birch). They were living at Enfield Road, Chiswick.


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, William George (born 1880), Charles Ellice (born 1882, Thomas Edward (born 1884) and Albert were living The Pumping Station house, Burlington Lane, Chiswick. Father George was a tankman at the sewage works


Albert’s mother died in 1894, His father married Kathleen Emma Gallagher in 1896.


On the 1901 Census the family of George Thomas (father), Kathleen (stepmother) with Thomas (assistant in boot shop) and Albert (an office boy) and Emily M were living at the Pumping Station, Burlington Lane Chiswick.


Albert married Kate Smith in Jun 1910. On the 1911 Census they were living at 33 Mawson Road, Chiswick. Albert was listed as a plumber.. His Father, Stepmother and Ethel M were living in a cottage a t Chiswick Sewage Works. 

Wartime Service

No Service record was found foe Albert. He enlisted as Private GS/36628 in the Royal Fusiliers (city of London Regiment (probably in early 1916). It seems he went to France on 2 Feb 1917 to join 1st Battalion of the regiment.


At some time (poss 3 Jun 1917) he may have transferred to 20th (Service) Battalion (3rd Public Schools 0 on 6 Jun 1917). This battalion as part of 33 Division took part in the Battle of 3rd Ypres (Passchendaele) in the Battle of Polygon Wood. William was likely wounded in this action and having been evacuated back to UK where he died of his wounds in a Nottingham Hospital.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £5 10s and arrears of £5 8s 6d was paid to his widow Kate.who came to live at "Chesterfield," High Rd., Potters Bar.
