Pre War

Walter Webb was born on 30th March 1891 in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, son of Enos Webb a, Brick Carter and Lucy Webb (nee Fuller). One of ten children although one died in infancy.


He was Baptised on 3rd May 1891 in Cheshunt, Herts.


1901 Census records Walter aged 10 living with his parents, four brothers and sister Maud (1), in Blindmans Lane, Cheshunt, Herts.


The family moved from Cheshunt to Romford in Essex, in about 1910.


No 1911 Census for Walter was found, his parents, three brothers and three sister are now living in Great Downs Cottages, London road, Abridge, Essex. His father Enos is now employed as a Horseman.

Wartime Service

Walter enlisted in Barking, Essex, posted to the Duke of Edinburgh’s (Wiltshire Regiment) with the service number 11912. Walter served with the 1st & 7th Battalions. On completion of his training, he arrived in France on 4th January 1915. He was Killed in Action between the 4th & 6th November 1918.


He is buried in Fontaine-Au-Bois Communal Cemetery in France. Grave Ref; C. 12. 

Additional Information

His mother Lucy Webb received a dependents pension of 5/- a week from 3rd June 1919, and his effects of £4-15s-03d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £24.
