Harry Gaylor was born in Little Berkhamsted, Herts, in 1893, the son of George and Emma Gaylor, and was baptised at Little Berkhamsted on 4 June 1893. He was one of seven children, although two died in infancy.
On the 1901 Census the family were living at Howe Green, Little Berkhamsted where his father was working as a farm labourer. By 1911 Harry was working as a garden labourer domestic and was living with parents and siblings James and George.
Wartime Service
Harry and his brother James both enlisted at Hertford and joined the 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, serving in France from 26 July 1915.
He died of wounds on 22 December 1915, aged 22, probably as a result of a minor skirmish in the front line trenches near Méaulte, and is buried at Meaulte Military Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £6 16s 7d. His mother received a pension of 12 shillings a week in respect of Harry and his brother James.
Brother to James Gaylor who also served with the 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. He died of wounds on 11 February 1918 and is buried in Noyon New British Cemetery, France. He is also remembered on the Little Berkhamsted Memorial.
