Pre War

Joseph George Bance Gavagnin was born in Kensington, London, in 1886 the son of Guiseppe (Joseph) and Emma Gavagnin.  On the 1891 Census he was living with his mother, sister  Blanche and aunt in Deal, Kent and his father was not at home. By the 1911 Census they had moved to 82 Farm Lane, Fulham and he was living with both his parents and sister and working as a Golf Club Maker. His father was an Italian born in Venice.

He married Clara Glover on 30 April 1913 at St John, Walham Green, Fulham, Middx. They had a daughter Blanche born in early 1914 and were living at Upwey, Cross Path, Radlett  in 1915.

(His widow's address on pension records is shown as her parents house at 43 Walham Grove, Dulwich SW6)

Wartime Service

Joseph enlisted in Chelsea initially serving with the Bedfordshire Regiment, later transferring to the Royal Irish Fusiliers.

He was killed in action on 16 August 1917, probably during the Battle of Langemarck (third battle of Ypres).

He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.

Additional Information

His widow Clara received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £1 15s 5d for herself and her child. Pension cards exist but do not give any indication of the amount of pension received.

CWGC gives the surname spelling of Gavigine but the majority of non-military records spell the surname as Gavagnin. Other alternative surname spellings used in various records are Gavaginn and  Gavaguin.
